The large and enthusiastic audience gathered in the beautiful parish church of St John the Baptist, Churchill in high anticipation. Skilled and entertaining performances, were given by all of the eight musicians competing for the prestigious title and the generous cheque from an anonymous donor. The audience was also involved by voting for their choice for the special Churchill Music! Audience Trophy. Each finalist introduced and performed a short programme of contrasting ‘moods’ to a set time limit and the judges were looking for both technical ability as well as those all important presentation skills.

The nail-biting interval was soothed with Churchill Music!'s renowned nibbles and entertainment given by Liz Glen's Ave singers and last year’s winner, french horn player, Holly Greenwood Rogers.

The adjudicating panel was chaired this year by Martin Cousin, ARCM. Martin is regarded as one of the most dynamic pianists of his generation performing in major concert halls throughout the UK and abroad. He has a passion for music education. Martin was joined by Alice Harper MA (Cantab) representing Churchill Music! trustees and Adrian Trapp MA (Cantab) Director of Music, Weston Parish Church. Martin's relaxed style ensured that the young musicians gave of their best. The panel's lively, constructive adjudication gave the musicians valuable pointers for their future success.

Patrick Hegarty (Yr 13, classical guitar) whose technically assured performance of Castelnuovo-Tedesco's Guitar Concerto No 1, 1st movement, was delivered from memory and had the audience enthralled, is Churchill Young Musician of the Year 2014.

The Churchill Music Audience trophy went to Georgina King (Yr 11, piano) who also won the Churchill Music! Junior trophy. Georgina entranced the audience with her wonderfully musical performance of Debussy's Deux Arabesques and Brubeck's, Weep No More.

The competition builds on the outstanding partnership between Churchill Music! and Churchill Academy. Our congratulations go to all the contestants, their accompanists, teachers, parents, supporters, Churchill Academy student photographer Shannon Darby-Jones who took the photograph of Patrick Hegarty – and to Churchill Music helpers - all contributed so much to the success of this very special event in the Churchill Music! calendar.
