Generously sponsored by local resident, Beryl Roper, the "Raymond Hayter Song Prize was awarded at Churchill Music!'s 'Churchill Young Musician of the Year'. Miss Roper has requested that the prize be awarded annually to the student who the Music Department of Churchill Community Foundation School feel has not only the most promising voice but has also worked hard.

The late Raymond Hayter was a larger than life character with a huge sense of humour and fun. He sang in oratorio with Choral Societies in London and in many operas. His operatic debut was at Sadler's Wells and he also appeared at various notable British Festivals deputising for Sir Geraint Evans. He enjoyed ranging from a successful tour of North America performing song cycles on radio, to opera and oratorio on television. He was very popular in this area North Somerset in the 60s and 70s and retained many links.

The Raymond Hayter Song Prize was presented to Nicole Bartlett by Mrs. Lynne Puckey, (pictured above) former and very popular deputy head of Churchill School. Nicole sang during the interval whilst adjudication was taking place. Nicole has a most memorable voice which compares very favourably with artists singing in West End Musicals and where Nicole would certainly not be out of place.
