Review: Churchill Music! promised a sparkling start to the new season of concerts the Galliard Wind Ensemble fulfilled that promise and more!

The audience were blown away with a programme that began in our comfort zone with Mozart's glorious Quintet in C minor, then led us into new pasture with the dazzling but the lesser known Briccialdi and finishing the first half with a Scherzo by Bozza, the audience were left breathless. It is almost impossible to describe the cascade, the avalanche, the volume of notes that poured from all the instruments....a miracle of accuracy, timing and musicianship.
After an interval buzzing with excitement and anticipation, Paul Patterson, one of the country's foremost composers of the age, introduced his composition, ‘Westerly Winds’. Based on West Country folk tunes, Paul who had come from London to be with us, told the audience how delighted he was that at last the piece was being performed in Somerset, as the first tune was Scrumpy Jack....followed by others from Dorset, Devon and Cornwall. This tuneful and lyrical music was beautifully played by the Galliard who had commissioned its recasting for wind quartet. After roars of applause, another collection of rural English folk songs followed, this time by Percy Grainger, and delightfully described as a bunch of "musical wildflowers" .
The final piece, Mississippi 5, showed the ensemble's brilliant versatility, moving from lyricism into high speed jazz, which told stories of characters and life on the iconic river. Each instrument had its solo part and the audience was left begging for more - the Charleston chosen as the encore completed a truly memorable and dazzling evening.
Churchill Music! more than fulfilled their promise of World class music in Churchill with this concert. It would have been hard to match in any of the foremost venues in the country.

A perfect opener for Churchill Music!'s new season. As former BBC New Generation Artists, the Galliard Ensemble has become one of Britain's leading chamber ensembles and has performed in many of the country's foremost venues and festivals including the Wigmore Hall, South Bank Centre, the Bridgewater Hall and at the BBC Proms. The Galliard are frequently broadcast on BBC Radio 3.

'Pure pleasure... This in short is wind quintet playing of great distinction... From this admirably recorded disc you also get a very good idea of how enjoyable the Galliard's public concerts must be. Strongly recommended.’ Gramophone Magazine.
