The Exultate Singers with the Trinity Singers, Churchill Academy Chamber Choir and Churchill, Sandford and Wrington Primary School choirs.

Review: The Summer Festival of Song reached its climax with the Grand Finale concert in All Saints Church, Weston-s-Mare. Six Choirs - The Exultate Singers, The Trinity Singers, Churchill Academy Chamber Choir, and the choirs of Churchill Sandford and Wrington Primary School came together. Head Teacher, Sarah Joskey from Wrington Primary and Catherine Kennell, music specialist from Sandford Primary, turned to the capacity audience and got everyone singing with their children.

The atmosphere crackled with anticipation for the main event, the World Premiere of The Same Flame, Churchill Music!’s commission with support from the National Lottery through Arts Council England. The composer, Thomas Hewitt Jones, the lyricist, Matt Harvey, Chairman of North Somerset Council, Cllr. Terry Porter and Ed Chaddock, from Boosey and Hawkes London, were in the audience.

The Same flame was inspired by Baron de Coubertin’s ideals of Olympism, Excellence, Determination, Courage, Inspiration, Respect, Friendship and Equality. With the expert guidance of musical director, David Ogden and the inspiring piano accompaniment of Christine Stevenson. Exultate Singers, Trinity Singers, Churchill Academy Chamber Choir and the choirs of Churchill, Sandford and Wrington primary schools gave a thrilling performance. The stars of the show were the children, who had memorised 420 words which they sang so beautifully that they were given a special round of applause. The final song, No Accident, depicting ‘Excellence’ was relentless, driving, driven, with words to match – ‘… no-one achieves excellence by accident… doggedness, diligence, discipline, drudgery…’ The music gallops furiously on with a sudden, accelerated rush to the finish, beneath a blazing, outburst of ‘EXCELLENCE…’ The audience rose to their feet, applauding and cheering.

Churchill Music's vision has been realised beyond all expectations, thanks to the commitment, unflagging encouragement and belief of those involved: the singers, the choir leaders and music teachers; the families and friends; Churchill Academy and their unstinting support and our hosts, All Saints Church Weston Super Mare.

The Summer festival of Song led by David Ogden with the Exultate Singers reaches a crescendo with this afternoon community event which includes the world premiere of Churchill Music!'s innovative new commission, 'The Same Flame'. The thirty-five minute song cycle inspired by Baron de Coubertin's ideals of Olympism, (which inspired the modern Olympic values), will involve the six choirs - the Exultate Singers, the Trinity Singers, Churchill Academy Chamber Choir, and children from Churchill, Sandford and Wrington Primary school choirs.

The Same Flame is composed by BBC Young Composer of the Year 2003, Thomas Hewitt-Jones whose deft musical witticism and quirky turns of phrase make him the perfect partner to poet and broadcaster, Matt Harvey, who has written the lyrics. Matt's poetry takes familiar concepts and turns them on their head to make you look at them in a fresh and often witty way. Matt was Poet Laureate for the Wimbledon Tennis Championships 2010 and is a popular poet on BBC Radio 4's Saturday Live. Such is the merit of the finished work that music publishers, Boosey and Hawkes are publishing it.

Bring your friends whose interest is purely in sport! Their feet will surely tap to the rhythms and intrinsic values that are embedded within all sports.

This work will appeal to all those who admire innovation, humour, great human values and outstanding talent within their community and beyond. Celebrate the run up to the Olympics, here in North Somerset and set the tempo for the exciting weeks ahead.

The work will be recorded and copies may be requested on the day. Already other choirs throughout country have expressed an interest in taking up the challenge to set their local community's feet tapping to this absolute genius of a community song cycle!

The Same Flame is supported by the National Lottery through Arts Council England

"Churchill Music's proposed new work, inspired by the Olympic ideals, is another fantastic example of the tremendous work they do in bringing different groups together through their concerts and performances.” John Penrose MP Minister for Tourism and Heritage.
