Review: Saturday 6th March 2010
Churchill Music!, the village’s outstanding music society, proved yet again that they can attract world-class musicians to their concerts with a dazzling performance on March 6th by the talented brass quintet, Majestic Brass.

The ensemble, who have performed for state and Royal occasions, and who individually can claim membership of the UK’s top orchestras such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, and bands including the Sid Lawrence Band, delighted a packed and enthusiastic audience.

The five young men’s virtuoso display of musicianship and technical mastery of their instruments (two trumpets, French horn, trombone and tuba) with their stylistic fluency and verve made the exacting scores and advanced instrumental techniques appear easy.

The music covered a variety of musical styles, which kept the audience on the edge of their seats, ranging from the beautiful rich sounds of Sonata St. Mark by Albinoni through to a truly dazzling finale of Caravan, made famous by Duke Ellington. This showed that the Brass Quintet really is at home on the chamber music circuit. Throughout the concert they educated us about the music we were enjoying – luring us gently and humorously along the path to greater musical understanding of works.

Majestic Brass spent Friday morning working with and inspiring the brass students at Churchill Community School (Performing Arts Status) before spending the afternoon with Year 6 at Churchill Primary School having fun exploring some of the links between Music and Maths using fractions, percentages and 'probability'. Both sets of students left their respective workshops with beaming smiles - a testament to the relaxed and friendly manner of this highly professional ensemble.

Both elements of their stay were summerised brilliantly by Chris Preddy, trumpeter and recent winner of Churchill Young Musician of the Year competition, who stated, “the workshop and concert given by Majestic Brass had been one of the most inspirational experiences of my musical life."

This virtuoso display of musicianship proved yet again how very fortunate we are to be able to enjoy world-class music in the quiet village of Churchill. Churchill Music!’s concerts enable us, and our children, to experience the world of music to the full.

Formed at the Royal College of Music in 2001, Majestic Brass is one of the finest young brass ensembles in the UK. This dynamic group of musicians are comfortable in any musical environment with a diverse repertoire spanning all genres. They never fail to wow audiences with their enthusiasm and unique style. Majestic Brass give concerts throughout the UK and Europe as well as performing music for many state and Royal ceremonies. They are also Ensemble in Residence at the Purcell School and Hinchley Wood Specialist Music School in Surrey.
