Clara Rodriguez, piano with Karin Fernald, actress

Clara Rodriguez is considered to be one of the world’s top female pianists, who’s playing, “Produced an unforgettable spell of unsullied beauty” Geoffrey Crankshaw, Musical Opinion. Karin Fernald is an actress and writer whose solo show on the l8th century diarist Fanny Burney has been acclaimed worldwide. Together they focus on the late Romantic period, as experienced by Teresa Carreño (1853-1917), a child prodigy and a star of the piano throughout her life.
Teresa Carreño came from a distinguished Venezuelan family, proudly connected to Simon Bolivar. At the age of eight she gave her debut recital in New York, going on to perform in all the major halls of Europe and America. She was showered with praise from music critics and won the admiration of the greatest musicians of the time, including Rossini, Liszt, Grieg, Gounod and Rubinstein.
Four years later in Paris, a music journal writes of the young Carreño, “She has the feeling of Bellini, the energy of Verdi, the expression of Mendelssohn and the improvisation of Beethoven. She is a Liszt in petticoats.” Perfect for our traditionally more humorous December concert!
