Matt Harvey and Peter Foggitt

Review: Churchill Music! triumphs once again with poet Matt Harvey and composer-pianist Peter Foggitt. Foggitt and Harvey, brought together by Churchill Music! formed a double act worthy of the West End as they delighted the packed audience with an evening of rhythm and rhyme.

Matt Harvey, also a presenter on Radio 4, is a poet of heart-warming sincerity and honesty. Bringing love and humour to the everyday – including slopes and teabags – he performed his poems with a genuine warmth and comedy.

Interspersing the poems in the first half were Franz Liszts’s piano interpretations of the Petrarch Love Sonnets; expertly realised by Peter Foggitt. And in the second half we were treated to List’s rare-performed Dante Sonata. Foggitt, like Harvey, is a born communicator and left the audience spellbound by these exquisite vignettes of love’s heights and depths. A special touch was added by Harvey reading the Petrarch sonnets after each rendition.

Best of all were the rare moments where rhythm and rhyme combined as Foggitt improvised accompaniment to Harvey’s words. Harvey’s book of poetry is entitled ‘The hole in the sum of my parts’, but what these deliciously poignant poems gained from Foggitt’s masterful musicianship was surely far greater than the sum of their parts. The hole was that this fabulous evening had to come to an end. Cheddar Valley Gazette December 07/ 06

Matt Harvey, described in the national press, "Poet of the moment" thrilled his 800 strong audience at the Snape Maltings Poetry Prom. Whimsical, perceptive, affectionate and above all, funny, Matt's effervescent poems chart one of our oldest essential quests: to love and be loved. Who better to intertwine his rhythmical poetry with music than with the young pianist/composer, Peter Foggitt whose improvisation was described by Piano Magazine as, "Stunning fire-breathing virtuosity" With delicious nibbles in the interval and not a mince pie in sight, this concert will be an exhilarating, amusing experience not to be missed!
